What do you think of when you think of St. Andrews? Well, if you are a golf fan you probably think of St. Andrews golf course. That’s what I thought the town was all about but after taking a day trip here, I learned it is so much more than that!
When choosing to visit Edinburgh, my fiance made it known that he wanted to visit St. Andrews. Though his true wish was to play a round on the course, he settled for a day trip and a chance to even see the course!

On the way to St. Andrews, we got to stop in a super cute, small coastal town called Anstruther for a bathroom break and a chance to grab coffee.
There are a few main spots to check out if you have limited time in St. Andrews like we did:
St Andrews University
- This is one of the oldest universities. I am also sure you know that Prince William and Kate met at this university? The university is right in the middle of town and it is beautiful to walk the grounds.
Founded in the 15th century, St Andrews is Scotland’s first university and the third oldest in the English speaking world. Teaching began in the community of St Andrews in 1410, and the University was formally constituted by the issue of a papal bull in 1413.
St Andrews Cathedral
- Have you figured out by now that I love ruins and archaeology? I was drawn to this place because of the history and ruins! This is the site of Scotland’s largest medieval church. It was likely built around 1130. It is amazing to be able to walk among tombstones and look at the remains up close. They have been carefully restored and maintained!
The Golf Course at St. Andrews
- This is probably why most people want to come to St. Andrews! People visit specifically for the old course
- 6721 yards, par 72
- The Swilcan Bridge and Hell Bunker are recognized across the world.
- The Open Championship is played here
- When we visited, it was one of the only cloudy, drizzly days we had in our entire Europe trip, but somehow the golf course was still beautiful. We walked the grounds, took photos at the bridge before being whistled to get off so someone could tee off.
Innis & Gunn Beer Kitchen
- After wandering through town, check out Innis & Gun Beer Kitchen. It is right in the middle of town and the Innis & Gunn is a brewing company based in Edinburgh. We got to enjoy some of their beer and good food! The restaurant itself is two levels, where you can look down on the bar. We enjoyed the atmosphere and it reminded us of home!
On the way back, we stopped off at Falkland, a tiny, picturesque town where I loaded up on more coffee, and of course more photos of me in front of a castle!
